National Crime Victims' Rights Week
So In September It will mark 9 years without my brother. My brother was such an incredible young man. He was driven, passionate, hyper, hilarious and kind. My brother was 22 years old when his life was taken by a random act of violence. At the time of his death he was the youngest elected official in the state and the youngest in the history of our city. Even though the years continue to go by without him, the day of his death feels like yesterday.
My family started a foundation in his name, The Matt Garcia Foundation, our mission statement is to support youth, stop crime and strengthen our community. Today we honored victims and it was beautiful. A local artist, Chad Glashoff also made a piece of art to be displayed outside the school named after my dear brother. We heard stories about other victims of violence and even survivors. I honestly believe if we all come together we can make this world a better place. I think about all the violence this world has and how so many people are affected by it daily and it makes my heart so heavy. If I can somehow be a part of changing the world that we live in then I feel like i lived a good life.
I hope you all have a wonderful rest of your week.
Peace & Love
